EMS Control Education and Training Standard
In 2009, PHECC developed a draft EMS Control Education and Training Standard. This Standard has 2 levels, Call Taker and Dispatcher. The Call Taker is a trained individual whose primary responsibility is to take emergency calls while the Dispatcher has the primary role in the dispatch and oversight of the emergency response.

A First For Prison Education
In June 2009 the City of Dublin Vocational Educational Committee (CDVEC) became a PHECC-recognised training institution. As educational service provider to the prison service, CDVEC works collaboratively with the Irish Prison Service in setting up prison schools throughout the country.

Cardiac First Responder Winners
RESUS 2009, held in Co Clare in November, was attended by 360 voluntary and statutory services and GPs, an increase of 100 delegate attendance on the previous event held in 2007. Sessions held during the two-day conference included airway management, the role of pre-hospital physicians, community responder schemes, cooling in cardiac arrest management, as well as research presentations.

MEWS
PHECC has introduced the Modified Early Warning Score(MEWS) for Practitioners as part of the 3rd Edition CPGs. MEWS will help to identify patients who have the potential to become acutely unwell without early interventions. In the western world MEWS is commonly used for the assessment of unwell hospital patients in non-acute wards.

“The Advanced Paramedic; Data Gathering and Reflective Practice”
This is a research paper which reports on a pilot prospective data collected during 12 months of an Advanced Paramedic service delivery with the HSE’s National Ambulance Service. The ensuing analytic exercise allowed the author to reflect on the skills used for a diversity of patients with different pathologies.

Paramedic Competency
Following your feedback PHECC will, over the coming months, engage in rolling out professional competency training at Paramedic level to support the introduction of the 3rd edition CPGs. Council’s initiative will adopt an innovative, creative approach to up-skilling which will empower Paramedics to achieve competency at a time, and more importantly, at a pace that suits themselves.
