Order of Malta Ambulance Corps ALS Conference 2017

The Order of Malta hosted its second Advanced Life Support (ALS) conference for its members in Athlone, Co. Westmeath on Saturday 28th of January. The ALS conference provided instructors and members with further insights into training and developments when dealing with various aspects of pre-hospital emergency care. This year the conference theme was ‘Medical Emergencies’.

The conference was kindly sponsored by Galen Limited, a Northern Ireland company who have licensed rights to Penthrox, an inhalation delivered formulation of the pain drug methoxyflurane which is self-administered. Penthrox is also known as the ‘green whistle’.

The ALS Conference was open to advanced paramedics, paramedics, student paramedics, nurses, student nurses, medical students and doctors within the Order of Malta.

Some of the most respected professionals within pre-hospital care in Ireland delivered interesting talks and presentations with plenty of questions and feedback from the audience.

Among the speakers and topics discussed were:

Advanced Paramedic Brendan Whelan – 12 Lead ECG interpretation
Advanced Paramedic Ricky Ellis – Personal Leadership and Team Development
Advanced Paramedic Ian Brennan – Clinical Audits
Dr Lisa Cunningham – Pre-Hospital Thrombolysis in Ireland.

Following the presentations members took part in workshops involving Cardiology and ECG which were overseen by Dr Lisa Cunningham.

Given the level of interest and positive feedback, plans are underway for a repeat event next year.
