A Driving Standard for the Irish Emergency Services
In autumn 2011 representatives of the principle emergency services, and related organisations, in Ireland came together under the auspices of the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to discuss the possibility of developing a common driving standard for drivers of emergency service vehicles. Following initial discussions, it was agreed that a working group working collaboratively would research and draft an emergency services driving standard (ESDS). It was agreed at the outset that the standard would be entirely voluntary and would not have a statutory footing.

National Vetting Bureau Bill
The Department of Health at a recent meeting announced that the Taoiseach has prioritised legislation which it wants it enacted before the end of the year. This proposes the establishment of a National Vetting Bureau which will have implications for all health agencies with a statutory register.

The National Defibrillator Register
The Task Force on Sudden Cardiac Death Report recommended that a national defibrillator register be established. In 2011 a joint initiative between the PHECC, HSE, NAS and the Irish Heart Foundation was commenced.

PHECC has been producing CPGs (originally called SOPs) since its inception in 2001. Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) became a legal entity following the signing of Statutory Instrument (SI) 575 of 2004, The PreHospital Emergency Care Council (Establishment) Order 2000 (Amendment) Order 2004.

eLearning Interim Evaluation
Module 2 - “Séan”
Module 1 - Summary
The evaluation of the first module of case based eLearning for Advanced Paramedics was comprehensive in nature. Participants self select after module completion in order to reduce selection bias. The response to the module alongside the reaction to learning through the use of technology was evaluated. The results which are to be published in the Journal of Paramedic Practice reveal an over whelmingly positive reception by practitioners and for case based eLearning.

Regulation and governance of paramedic-based pre-hospital emergency care: a comparison of international models and assessment of strengths, weaknesses and best practice.
This study was undertaken by Swansea University in 2011-2012 in response to an invitation from the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council. The study was commissioned to give insight into how Ireland’s experience of pre-hospital emergency care regulation and governance compares with other international systems.

Paramedic Mizen Head to Malin Head Cycle
A team from the HSE National Ambulance Service recently completed a sponsored cycle raising funds for research into children’s cancer. The following are photos of the riders and their support team. In total a cheque of just over €12,000 was presented to the Children’s Medical and Research Foundation for Children’s Cancer Research from the Paramedic Mizen to Malin Cycle Team. Congrats to all participants and supporters.
